Massimo De Carlo

Art Dealer

Born in 1958, Massimo De Carlo opened his first art gallery in Milan in 1987. Trained as a pharmacist, he first  encountered contemporary art through experimental jazz music.

MASSIMODECARLO gallery swiftly stood out on the international art scene for its bold, counter-current choices. The gallery focused on artists who were not well known in Italy, such as John Armleder, Olivier Mosset and Felix Gonzalez-Torres. In the years that followed, the gallery program expanded to include prominent artists such as Alighiero Boetti, Cady Noland, Rudolf Stingel, Steven Parrino, Maurizio Cattelan and Carsten Höller, among others.

For over 30 years, MASSIMODECARLO has played a fundamental role in the contemporary art scene by promoting a vital dialogue between artists and national and international institutions, as well as cultivating relationships with other galleries, critics, curators and collectors.

Today, the gallery represents and works with over 70 artists, operating spaces across Europe and Asia, in Milan, London, Paris, Hong Kong and Seoul, as well as an experimental virtual reality space.

With a particular passion for architecture, MASSIMODECARLO offers artists a unique setting to present their work, and provides visitors with a one-of-a-kind space to experience art. Its headquarters in Milan was designed in the early 1930s by Piero Portaluppi, while its listed space in London’s Mayfair dates back to the 18th century, Elsewhere, MASSIMODECARLO Pièce Unique in Paris was designed by iconic Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, and its Hong Kong gallery is located in a former prison, in what is now the Tai Kwun cultural hub.

Mr. De Carlo has been a member of the Art Basel Hong Kong Selection Committee since 2013.
