Senior Advisor for Academic and Cultural Affairs, Qatar Museums
Dr. Jelena Trkulja is the Senior Advisor for Academic and Cultural Affairs at Qatar Museums, where she works closely with the Chairperson on educational strategy, research in education, cultural diplomacy, cultural affairs and inter-institutional collaboration.
Prior to this, she held academic positions in the United States and Europe, teaching and conducting research in art and architectural history at Princeton and Tulane universities, as well as the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. In Greece and Serbia she directed a major European Commission-funded research project on the evaluation and protection of medieval monuments. In addition to her scholarly commitments, Dr. Trkulja worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and an art gallery in New York.
She also worked at a consulting company and nongovernmental organizations on projects involving education, school reforms, and international cooperation between museums, cultural institutions and universities. She has participated in, and organized, numerous conferences and public forums worldwide, and has lectured and published extensively on Byzantine art and architecture, as well as on modern and contemporary architecture and design.
Dr. Trkulja’s professional and academic service includes memberships on the boards of various universities where she has taught, and more recently on the Joint Advisory Board of Virginia Commonwealth University-Qatar and the Board of Governors of University College London Qatar. She holds a Ph.D. and master’s degrees in art and archaeology from Princeton University, and a bachelor’s degree in European Studies from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.
